Well-researched and presented, Abhishek! A sense of community is primal, isn't it? Historically, humans functioned in tribes. And now in our evolved avatars, the search is for meaningful communities, especially for those who migrate away from their roots for a job, to pursue their passion, or for a settled life. Brands also strive to build a community of people. And here, on Substack, we creators are also creating a community around our individual Substacks as well as collectively by liking, commenting, and sharing posts!

Lots to ponder about and break down in your comment Yash. We naturally seem to gravitate towards building communities for our professions. But we also seem to demonstrate the same behaviours online in a variety of different ways through communities for books (Goodreads), communities for films (Letterboxd), communities for music (Spotify), communities for Academic Research (Academia etc). Creative people want opportunities to build something valuable for people in their field and naturally move towards these hubs which is why people you see movement to certain countries and certain cities. Substack is an ideal model of a digital community that wants to build a platform where people engage on long form writing. It is very different from the standard model of social media with word and character limits.

'Core sense of “shared life” and mutual dependence' - stuck with me, a lot like how I interpret communities. Such a well researched article, reading this made me realise that our world is shaped so much with brilliant individuals who had wonderful communities backing them. Our need to connect and belong is so innate.

Shared Life + Mutual Dependence... Love that Forum. I was so happy to feature one from Mumbai in this post. Writing this made me wonder how their work was influence by the conversations they had with peers and friends in these groups.

Thanks Hargun. This was a lot of fun to write as well. It is amazing to observe and notice how humans build communities to connect with other like minded people. My favourite modern example is Juhu Reads!

Ooo, yes! Juhu Reads! <3

Honestly, that’s the only example I have personally experienced as an adult in a “third place”.
