1. Learning from People
David Holmes (born 1 December 1983) is a British podcast host and former actor and stunt performer. Holmes was the stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter in the first six films of the Harry Potter film series. In January 2009 Holmes was seriously injured and left partially paralysed after an accident during the filming of a stunt test for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He is credited in the finished film as a stunt performer. David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, a documentary about Holmes's life released on HBO on 15 November 2023. It was an emotional documentary as his life changed completely after the accident. The documentary shows you how he dealt with this accident and how it affected his family in the long run. I learned a lot from Holmes about forgiveness, undying optimism and incredible hope in the face of turmoil.
2. Learning from Ideas and Questions
Recently, I started playing Pickleball at my local park. I am really enjoying the sport and now play it a couple of times each week. I was curious about how this sport became one of the fastest growing sports in North America. If you are curious you can understand how to play the game in this video. I found this short VOX Media video that explained the craze behind this sport.
3. Learning from Books, Websites and Blogs
Ali Abdaal is a YouTuber and Writer who has written a weekly newsletter titled, ‘Sunday Snippets’ from 2018 to 2024. He has written over 300 editions of this newsletter. I admire his consistency and dedication to provide so much value to his audience even though his primary focus is his Youtube Channel. He shares productivity tips, book recommendations and life advice based on his own experiences in this newsletter. This is a great resource with lots of actionable and relatable advice of feel good productivity. All the posts from each year can be read for free on this newsletter archive page of his website.
4. Learning from Films, Videos and Shows
One Day (2011) is my favourite romantic film ever. It is directed by Lone Scherfig and stars Anne Hathaway and Jason Sturgess. It is adapted from the book, One Day (2009) written by David Nicholls. There is also a television show based on the book released by Netflix. Here is brief synopsis of the film
A couple spend the night together on 15 July 1988, knowing they must go their separate ways the next day. The novel then visits their lives on 15 July every year for the next 20 years.
The film is beautiful because it shows you how two people evolve over a 20 year period. Along with the changes in their lives you also notice how their ideas of love, success, family and more change with time. My favourite quote from the book is this one about appreciating what you have and living in the moment.
“You can live your whole life not realizing that what you're looking for is right in front of you.”
5. Learning from Podcasts and Music
Tarsame Mittal interviews Ankur Tewari in this episode of the Music Podcast. They explore the concept of ‘music supervision’, the journey of forming his band, ‘Ankur & The Ghalat Family,’ producing music for Bollywood films and his lessons as an indie artist. My favourite songs by this artist are Dil Beparvah, Aa Jaao and Dil Haare. I love how he writes music and how he uses the acoustic guitar as his primary instrument. This podcast does a great job in helping you understand the mind of a musician and how they convert emotions and experiences to songs we love.
