#95 - Notes on CERN, Carousels and Connection
Education Coffee is a 2xWeekly Newsletter on People, Ideas and Culture.
In each edition of this newsletter, I will share some inspiring web resources that I have curated after hours of research to ensure that you have the best education coffee in your inbox. In upcoming editions, I will focus on sharing insights, notes and realizations that I gather from people, ideas, books, films and podcasts. Please subscribe to this newsletter if you enjoyed reading this edition. This month I have taken up a #30DaySubstackChallenge. I want to challenge myself to write a newsletter everyday for the next thirty days. I have really enjoyed writing this newsletter and this is a way for me to build my skill set as a newsletter writer. I will go back to writing a 2xWeekly Newsletter in January 2025.
1. Learning from People
Cleo Abram creates Youtube Videos about things she is curious about. She previously created videos for Vox (the gold standard for Youtube infotainment) I am a fan and I think she is amazing. Watch this video to get a glimpse of her work and investigations
2. Learning from Ideas and Questions
Powerful video by the Loveena Kamath on the Full Disclosure Youtube Channel about how start up life isn’t as glamorous as we think it is. We don’t hear about the failures because media is not incentivized to talk about those stories. She spoke about her own experience starting up in her 20’s and her recommendations for anyone doing so in their 20’s.
3. Learning from Books, Websites and Blogs
I have been reading a lot of Linkedin Carousels. It is a visual way to communicate information in bite sized pieces on the platform. I enjoy reading posts on Linkedin as people share lots of insights from their professional career and experience. It has 2x engagement beacause of how visually appealing it is as information. Here is an article from Linkedin by Matt Dryzmala about how to make a carousel. You can follow that up with this short video on how to make your first Linkedin Carousel by Arnaud Belinga.
4. Learning from Films, Videos and Shows
I saw this film called Village Rockstars 2 by Rima Das at #MAMI2024. Here is my review on the film. You can find all my film reviews (400+ reviews) on Letterboxd.
The protagonist is a young girl that stays in a small village in Assam. Her family owns land and are farmers but are affected by the seasonal rain and flooding. She has dreams of being a musician and learning music. But her mother’s illness and brother’s addiction bring her dreams to a pause and make her immediately reassess her priorities and purpose. She comes to accept her life and appreciate it for the good it has. The film ends with her hopes of being a musician still intact. Throws light on the life of farmers in rural India, mother daughter relationship, how music is perceived in society and the tension of development projects in India. The music is another character in the film. This film made me pause and really empathize with the main character. One of my favourite films of the year.
5. Learning from Podcasts and Music
Hrishikesh Hirway is an American musician, producer, and podcast and television host. In this TED talk he spoke about how to discover new music and listen consciously. I discovered a video song he made in memory of his mom that is also linked below. It is a beautiful ode to music and how we use it to remember the people we love in our lives. Music is truly a way to build a deeper connection with other humans.
