Education Coffee is a Newsletter on People, Ideas and Culture.
In each edition of this newsletter, I will share some inspiring web resources that I have curated after hours of research to ensure that you have the best education coffee in your inbox. In upcoming editions, I will focus on sharing insights, notes and realizations that I gather from people, ideas, books, films and podcasts.
1. Learning from People
Deepinder Goyal is an entrepreneur and investor. He founded Zomato as FoodieBay in 2008 with Pankaj Chaddah. He studied at the IIT Delhi from 2000 to 2005. He worked for the consulting company, Bain & Company from 2006 to 2009. During the job he noticed that all the menu cards from restaurants were kept in a folder at the office canteen. So he started scanning all the menus and put it up in the company intranet. This generated a lot of engagement from his colleagues in the consulting company. He then decided to extend this service to other professionals outside the company and started Zomato as a restaurant-listing-and-recommendation portal. In 2015, Zomato started its food delivery service in India. In July 2021, Zomato went public, opening its initial public offering at a valuation of over US$8 billion. The company has invested in other startups like Blinkit, Urbanspoon and Runnr. He shares his entrepreneurship journey with Shraddha Sharma from YourStory.in in this two part interview. I share my visual sketch notes from the talk below as well.
2. Learning from Ideas and Questions
Investopedia defines Personal finance as a term that covers managing your money as well as saving and investing. I recently started using the Groww investing platform and have spent considerable time exploring their free learning resources to understand terms related to Personal Finance. I think it is important for all of us to educate ourselves about personal finance. I am guilty of not focusing on this part of my life in my early 20’s but am trying to course correct in my 30’s These resources have helped me change my relationship with money and appreciated how it can help you fulfill your personal and professional goals in the long term.
3. Learning from Books, Websites and Blogs
I find some great #BookRecommendations from YouTubers. I am always on the lookout for my next read and spend a lot of time browsing through bookshops, home libraries and Goodreads to find a good book. Here is video by Vaani Mahesh from Kitaabi Cabins with some recommendations on #BookTubers you must follow for all things reading and books.
4. Learning from Films, Videos and Ads
#ADTalk is a Youtube series where I share my reaction to popular Indian advertisements. In each episode of this series I will share my reaction to an AD by talking about the 3 S's which are Story, Service and Strategy. I share my reaction on the Story being told (connection to a human story or need). I share my reaction on the Service being provided (product or service details). I I share my reaction on the Strategy being adopted (audio, video, branding, setting) What did you think about the ad (linked below)? Share your thoughts in the comments below. Here is link to the Vodafone advertisement I discussed in this #ADTalk video.
5. Learning from Podcasts and Music
Zerodha is company and stock broker offering a platform for trading of futures and options, commodity trading, equity and mutual funds. Seema Patil is the Director of Zerodha and Nithin Kamath is the Co-Founder of Zerodha. They are successful entrepreneurs but show you a different side of their life in this YourStory interview with Shradha Sharma.
They talk about how fighting cancer helped change their perspective and priorities in life. I learned a lot about compassion, purposeful investing and finding humour in challenging situations. I share my show notes in the visual below.
