#103 - Notes on Vultures, Music and Podcasts
Education Coffee is a Newsletter on People, Ideas and Culture.
In each edition of this newsletter, I will share some inspiring web resources that I have curated after hours of research to ensure that you have the best education coffee in your inbox. In upcoming editions, I will focus on sharing insights, notes and realizations that I gather from people, ideas, books, films and podcasts. This month I have taken up a #30DaySubstackChallenge. I want to challenge myself to write a newsletter everyday for the next thirty days. I have really enjoyed writing this newsletter and this is a way for me to build my skill set as a newsletter writer. I will go back to writing a 2xWeekly Newsletter in January 2025.
1. Learning from People
Benjamin Zander is an English conductor, who is currently the musical director of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He has two infectious passions: classical music, and helping us all realize our untapped love for it -- and by extension, our untapped love for all new possibilities, new experiences, new connections.
2. Learning from Ideas and Questions
Vultures always scared me. But I developed a new found respect for them after watching this short video. Here is a note from TED about this talk
As natural garbage collectors, vultures are vital to our ecosystem -- so why all the bad press? Why are so many in danger of extinction? Raptor biologist Munir Virani says we need to pay more attention to these unique and misunderstood creatures, to change our perception and save the vultures.
3. Learning from Books, Websites and Blogs
4. Learning from Films, Videos and Shows
The Cannes Film Festival, until 2003 called the International Film Festival, is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from all around the world. I hope to attend this festival some day and it was nice to understand the history of this festival in this video from The Battuta Youtube Channel.
5. Learning from Podcasts and Music
Joseph James Rogan is an American podcaster, UFC color commentator, comedian, actor, and former television host. He hosts The Joe Rogan Experience, a podcast in which he discusses current events, comedy, politics, aliens, philosophy, science, martial arts, and hobbies with celebrity guests. This was Joe Rogan’s first podcast recording ever.
He has now created 2000+ episodes on his Youtube Channel titled, ‘Powerful JRE’. I do not agree with everything he has said but I truly admire his persistence in building this podcast over a eleven year period from 2013 to 2024. We all start somewhere and that somewhere does not have to always be perfect. Here is a video he recently put out about his 10 years in the podcasting world.
My favourite episodes are his interviews with Naval Ravikant (EP 1309), Chamath Palhipatiya (EP 2206) , Matty Matheson (EP 1641), Michael Pollan (EP 1121), Miley Cyrus (EP1531) and Iliza Schlesinger (EP1882). You can find more episodes in this playlist on his channel.
